Why Are My Lights Flickering? Common Causes & When to Call an Electrician

Flickering lights can be annoying—and sometimes even alarming. While a single flicker now and then isn’t always a big deal, persistent or unpredictable flickering could point to a deeper electrical issue that shouldn’t be ignored. As qualified electrical contractors, we get this question a lot: “Why are my lights flickering?” Here are some of the most common causes and when it’s time to bring in a professional.

  1. Loose Light Bulb

Sometimes the fix is simple. A bulb that’s not screwed in all the way can lose contact with the socket, causing it to flicker. Always check this first—just make sure the light is turned off before adjusting.

  1. Faulty Switch or Dimmer

If your light flickers when you flip the switch or use a dimmer, the switch itself might be worn out or incompatible—especially with modern LED bulbs. Older dimmers often don’t work well with energy-efficient lighting, which can cause noticeable flickering.

  1. Bulb Type or Compatibility

Not all bulbs play nicely with every fixture or dimmer. Make sure you’re using bulbs that match the recommended wattage and type. LED flickering is especially common when used with non-LED-compatible dimmers.

  1. Voltage Fluctuations

When large appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, or microwaves kick on, they can cause temporary voltage drops. If your lights dim or flicker noticeably during these times, it may indicate your circuit is overloaded or improperly balanced.

  1. Loose Wiring or Electrical Faults

This is where things get serious. Loose or damaged wiring, especially inside walls or light fixtures, can lead to flickering and even pose a fire risk. If the flickering is happening in multiple rooms or seems random, it’s best to have a licensed electrician inspect your system.

  1. Utility Service Issues

Sometimes the problem lies outside your home. If your neighbours are experiencing similar issues, the problem could be with the local grid or transformer, in which case you should contact your power supplier.

When in Doubt, Call a Pro

If your lights flicker regularly or you notice other issues like buzzing, burning smells, or frequent breaker trips, don’t take chances. Contact a qualified electrician to inspect your system and ensure your home is safe.
